Daily Scangauge Report
Below are selected trips or trip segments. This is the detail that the Scangauge shows me while driving. If you would like to order a Scangauge from me, visit here.
July 29, AM
Abbotsford to downtown Vancouver (CBC Radio)
Fuel economy: 2.92 L/100 km / 97 mpg imperial / 81 mpg US
distance travelled: 71.0 kms
fuel consumed: 2.07 litres
maximum speed: 100 kmh
average speed: 67 kmh
Max RPM: 3000
Fuel cost for trip: $3.11
Comments:
Nice drive, good traffic flow. Drove faster than usual, yet still managed under 3.0 for the round trip. The CBC Radio ‘Sounds Like Canada’ segment was great… a couple other hypermilers were on air with me.
July 15 - filled up tank
This included my trip to Whidbey Island and commuting to/from work
Fuel economy: 3.09 L/100 km / 91 mpg imperial / 76 mpg US
distance travelled: 686.0 kms
fuel consumed: 21.185 litres
Comments:
Some of this was top down driving… a decent tank, but I’m looking to be under 3.0 soon
July 14, AM
Abbotsford to Global TV, Burnaby
Fuel economy: 3.15 L/100 km / 90 mpg imperial / 75 mpg US
distance travelled: 55.3 kms
fuel consumed: 1.74 litres
maximum speed: 90 kmh
average speed: 50 kmh
Max RPM: 2900
Fuel cost for trip: $2.35
Comments:
Another top down trip… started at 6 am from Abbotsford. Traffic was light up to 176th. Surprised to see a fellow in a pickup truck motioning me around 264th, as though to say ‘why aren’t you driving 110 kmh?’. It wasn’t like he was being held up… it was clear in the fast lane. I honked and waved. ‘Have a nice day!’ At 176th, it turned into a very slow commute, one I haven’t done for years. But traffic flow was decent, and it was nice to see people trying to maintain a constant speed of 5-10 kmh. I was at 3.0 L/100 and only rose to 3.1 L/100 by the time I crossed the Port Mann. 90 mpg, top down, having fun… what’s not to like? Steve and Lynn were great hosts. I’ll post a link to the Global TV footage once I have it. As an aside, the ‘water4gas’ topic is coming up more and more, so expect me to cover this one in depth shortly. Stephen Quinn needs to have another segment on CBC where people have a chance to address the concerns about the false claims of ‘water4gas’ proponents. They’re even using deceptive lingo like ‘water hybrid’. Nonsense.
July 13, AM
South Langley to Abbotsford via 40th Ave/Fraser Hwy
Fuel economy: 3.07 L/100 km / 92 mpg imperial / 77 mpg US
distance travelled: 27.0 kms
fuel consumed: 0.83 litres
maximum speed: 81 kmh
average speed: 50 kmh
Max RPM: 3250
Fuel cost for trip: $1.14
Comments: Did this trip with the convertible top completely down, and the side bars stored in the hatch. This tank I’m running B20 biodiesel - had been down to Whidbay Island and back yesterday, also with the top down a whole bunch. Managed about 3.3 for the day.
July 12 - filled up tank
This was a bit over a week worth of driving
Fuel economy: 3.00 L/100 km / 94 mpg imperial / 78 mpg US
distance travelled: 750.0 kms
fuel consumed: 22.50 litres
Comments:
This is the farthest I’ve driven on one tank of fuel since I was last near Brandon MB. Mike Nish sent me a few sets of vortex generators, which I will be installing on my car shortly. Hoping for a 2% fuel economy improvement. The vortex generators reduce aerodynamic drag on any vehicle. The rear air wake typically wraps around the vehicle and creates a turbulent vacuum, which reduces fuel mileage.
July 1, AM
Abbotsford to CBC Radio in downtown Vancouver (round trip)
Fuel economy: 2.77 L/100 km / 102 mpg imperial / 85 mpg US
distance travelled: 142.0 kms
fuel consumed: 3.94 litres
maximum speed: 92 kmh
average speed: 65 kmh
Max RPM: 3000
Fuel cost for trip: $5.52
Comments:
First day of the new ‘carbon tax’ in BC. Happy Canada Day. I had to be at the CBC studio this morning by 8 am for a short interview. Took Hwy 1 to 1st Avenue, then down Main and over the viaduct to Cambie Street. Under 4 litres for the round trip, getting over 100 mpg. Not my best, but still decent. The parking cost $6.00…
June 27, AM
Abbotsford to Cloverdale - mixed driving - different starting point further east
Fuel economy: 2.52 L/100 km / 112 mpg imperial / 93 mpg US
distance travelled: 41.3 kms
fuel consumed: 1.04 litres
maximum speed: 80 kmh
average speed: 54 kmh
Max RPM: 2800
Fuel cost for trip: $1.52
Comments:
Boom to bust. I hit pretty much every light today between 232nd and CPX, including all but one in downtown Cloverdale. Even starting from a different point in Abbotsford further east near the highway didn’t help. Major fuel economy killer. Well, for a hypermiler anyway. :)
The Abbotsford Times is running a story on my pursuits in the Canada Day edition, and I’m scheduled to be on CBC Radio Vancouver that same morning (I’ll be on sometime after 8 am).
Scangauges are still out of stock, pretty much everywhere, but I hope to have some by July 11th. I’ll be ordering some vortex generators for the rear of the car very soon… expecting a .1 L/100 km improvement from that… but, I also hope to prove the case for aerodynamics so I can get my company going in the right direction. Remember, there’s a $50,000,000 fuel bill at stake here, not just my 2 litres of consumption per day.
June 26, AM
Abbotsford to Cloverdale - mixed driving
Fuel economy: 2.37 L/100 km / 119 mpg imperial / 99 mpg US
distance travelled: 39.3 kms
fuel consumed: 0.93 litres
maximum speed: 80 kmh
average speed: 59 kmh
Max RPM: 2650
Fuel cost for trip: $1.36
Comments:
Bonanza this morning! Made it almost entirely from 232nd to CPX without using the brakes, as evidenced by the higher average speed today. Cruised at 80 kmh on Hwy 1. There were a few honks, but it’s worth noting that you are supposed to keep right except to pass, and I find that most drivers are utterly clueless about this - staying left and holding up those wishing to pass the slower vehicles on the right. Honk all you want folks - but I’m not speeding up.
Last nights trip home wasn’t spectacular, but I did manage to use only 1.99 litres for the day.
June 25, AM
Abbotsford to Cloverdale - mixed driving
Fuel economy: 2.46 L/100 km / 115 mpg imperial / 96 mpg US
distance travelled: 39.5 kms
fuel consumed: 0.97 litres
maximum speed: 80 kmh
average speed: 55 kmh
Max RPM: 2650
Fuel cost for trip: $1.42
Comments:
I headed off this morning, and went to the Chevron by my condo to set the tire PSI back up to 42. After that I set the cruise for 80 kmh on Hwy 1 and rolled down the road sipping diesel once in awhile. Didn’t have the greatest luck with lights - ended up turning off the engine a few times… well, under 1 litre to get to work is pretty nifty. Will have to repeat a few more times and verify upon fillup.
June 24, PM
Cloverdale to Abbotsford - mixed driving
Fuel economy: 2.67 L/100 km / 106 mpg imperial / 88 mpg US
distance travelled: 38.9 kms
fuel consumed: 1.04 litres
maximum speed: 81 kmh
average speed: 58 kmh
Max RPM: 2750
Fuel cost for trip: $1.53
Comments:
First commuter trip since having my good mechanic install the OEM cruise control into the car, which although unavailable from the Canadian MB dealers, can be had for about $500. The cruise control will help me maintain a more constant speed on the highway and in extended suburban areas.
Interestingly, my tire PSI on this trip was lower than usual, as I have not aired up since returning from Oregon. I’ll air up in the AM, and see if I can ratchet down the fuel consumption a bit further. I’d like to hit 2.5 on the daily commute to and from work, which would mean 1 litre or less each direction. I’ve a couple more tricks up my sleeve to get there, and you may just see cardboard taped over the rear wheels yet…
One more note - I also replaced the air filter on Monday with a K&N. Not a huge improvement in fuel economy expected for a diesel, but clogged air filters are bad for fuel economy, and you should not neglect this item.
June 22 - daytime
Tillamook OR to Abbotsford BC
Fuel economy: 3.18 L/100 km / 89 mpg imperial / 74 mpg US
distance travelled: 625 kms
fuel consumed: 19.68 litres
Fuel cost for trip: $28.71
Comments:
The trip back from the Oregon Coast was uneventful, although we were 50 lbs heavier due to wet gear and acquired goods. I did drop the PSI while in Oregon due to much slippery sand on the coastal roads, and didn’t air up for the highway trip. Probably cost 0.1 L/100 km or thereabouts. While in Oregon, we consumed a tank going to and fro, and averaged 3.5 L/100 km in mixed driving, including lots of stop and go through Newport and Lincoln City, as well as up and down all the mountain roads.
June 19, daytime
Bellingham WA to Astoria OR - highway
Fuel economy: 3.12 L/100 km / 91 mpg imperial / 75 mpg US
distance travelled: 425 kms
fuel consumed: 13.24 litres
Fuel cost for trip: $17.20
Comments:
$17.00 from the top of Washington to the top of Oregon. Under 3.5 US gallons. And this was fully loaded with 100 lbs of camping gear, and my wife. I would have been impressed to be under 3 L/100 kms, but it’ll do.
June 18, AM
Abbotsford to Cloverdale - mixed driving
Fuel economy: 2.84 L/100 km / 99 mpg imperial / 83 mpg US
distance travelled: 39.4 kms
fuel consumed: 1.12 litres
maximum speed: 89 kmh
average speed: 52 kmh
Max RPM: 3100
Fuel cost for trip: $1.58
Comments:
The trip today wasn’t particularly frugal - my highway speed was slightly higher than yesterday as traffic conditions were busier, and I try to avoid becoming an obstacle when there is a mad rush around me. Lots of transports on the road, and I even had to stop at one point to clear a ladder off of the fast lane that everyone was just driving around… so that added 2-3 minutes of idling. (Not good to turn off a turbo diesel immediately after leaving the highway.)

I did a ‘calibration’ fill tonight to verify the accuracy of the Scangauge. There are adjustment factors you can make to fine tune the unit to your car and driving style. A calibration typically involves keeping track of the actual fuel consumed over 5 tanks, and comparing it to the total the Scangauge says you consumed. You can then make an adjustment on the Scangauge settings so it will match. What I did last night was filled up at the same station, same pump as the night before, and filled right to the top of the filler tube on the car - which is okay to do on a diesel, but don’t do this on a gasoline vehicle. This ensures that the fuel I pump is equal to the fuel I burnt since the last fill. The Scangauge said 3.47 litres, and the fuel receipt said 3.425 litres, 1% difference. On that small of a fill, I consider it equal, and that the Scangauge is accurate. I do calibration fills from time to time to make sure any changes in my driving style don’t require any small adjustments in the Scangauge settings.
June 17, AM
Abbotsford to Cloverdale - mixed driving
Fuel economy: 2.74 L/100 km / 103 mpg imperial / 86 mpg US
distance travelled: 37.2 kms
fuel consumed: 1.02 litres
maximum speed: 88 kmh
average speed: 57 kmh
Max RPM: 3000
Fuel cost for trip: $1.44
Comments:
After an oil change last night at 30,000 kms, I was anticipating a tiny bit better fuel economy today, but not to be… I’m blaming it on the large qty of lights I hit. Last year this time, I could get to work on $0.80 worth of diesel, in case you were wondering. Times are changing.
June 16, AM
Abbotsford to Cloverdale - mixed driving
Fuel economy: 2.69 L/100 km / 105 mpg imperial / 87 mpg US
distance travelled: 39.4 kms
fuel consumed: 1.06 litres
maximum speed: 89 kmh
average speed: 52 kmh
Max RPM: 2900
Fuel cost for trip: $1.55
Comments:
After a few days of really trying to hypermile, I’m getting some great numbers. Slowed it down a bit more today on Hwy 1, going just over 80 kmh. Still a few tricky spots though - like the the Langley Bypass with lights forcing me to use brakes on occasion. Turned car off at 200th waiting the next green, and went 50 kmh over the hill into Cloverdale. It seems like every day now there is someone in a fuel efficient car on Hwy 1 behind me, keeping distance, and travelling at the same speed. I’m not alone.

Comments:
This one was fun… starting off getting 2.2 in the flats, then all the way up to 3.0 with the uphill portion to Mount Lehman, then a huge coasting section out of gear got me back to 2.7, and then into Matsqui I timed the lights and used no brakes… nice trip
