Hi,

It's not the kind of record you could call official - but unofficially, this is a record for the smart, AFAIK.

There is a story from Germany about a 2.33 L/100km record for a smart on the autoban drafting a motorhome. I drafted no one today, for the record, and as well, had my luggage.

Also - it is uphill from Yorkton to Wadena, albeit only slightly.

The biggest factor today was the wind.

This time around I wanted to explore the biodiesel potential. I have so much more learning to do though about all the related issues.

It has been a great trip thus far. Thanks for writing.

Was great to meet you today in Yorkton. Wish we had more time to talk. I have been making biodiesel to run in my '91 GMC 6.2 for over a year now and run b100 most of the spring summer and fall. I am getting about 33mpg compared to the 28-30mpg when I first got the truck. I am in the planning stage for a commercial biodiesel plant to be set up by this fall, I hope.

I like the idea of the smart car, but it doesn't have the room for all my tools...lol.

HI Keith, I didn't realize you were attempting another challenge. Congrats on getting your goal. How is this all officially recognized?
Did you break some sort of record?

Impressive? Yes. But it's not an ordinary Golf; it's a gasoline direct injection 1.6 engine that is not available in North America. Had they used a TDI, it'd have done it on maybe 10-15% less fuel and better driveability.

I think this was - as much as anything else - an opportunity for Shell to use its experimental fuel.

I think someone SHOULD do this trip in a smart fortwo cdi. It'd massacre the Golf FSI, even on regular diesel. 3.2 L/100 km, anyone?

It really is a shame that the conversion to US standards is so brutal. I mean, come on, padding the underside of the tempered glass roof?!? Bizarre. I guess if I lived in the USA I'd be forced to consider one of these....but the prices are too high. I'd still be tempted though. Some people in Canada think the prices are too high here!

Anyway if I were down in the US, I would wait and see if "official" smarts (sales sanctioned by smart gmbh) will be coming stateside in 2007. That seems to be fairly likely.

I'm glad I have mine up here in BC, and I'm enjoying it very much after 16 months.

I have to agree... the mileage of the Yaris sedan is LOWER than the Corolla. Huh?

But think of this too - there is now an Aveo and Wave sedan for Canada, and I guess Toyota is offering a direct competitor against those...

Still, for somewhere around $1500 more, you're into a Corolla, so why would you bother.

I know I wouldn't.

Finally remembered to check back to see how you made out. Impressive run.
I drove from Cold Lake Al to Kelowna and on to Howley NL back in 1997 in a 1997 Pontiac Firfly (Betty) 3 cyclinder 1 litre two door hatch with the Wife two kids dog and a cat and all our luggage. Whew never going to do that again. I didn't keep the records like you did but we figured it cost us somewhere around 250$. We did travel through the states for a good part though. Gas was somewher around 30-40 cents a liter in Alberta when we left.
I believe the mileage for the firefly (Betty) was somewhere in the range of 66 MPG.
Alas she is no more in my posession since at 190,000 km she was starting to show signs of wear specifically the clutch was at the end of its stroke and she was leaking oil so we traded her for a Chevy Aveo.
All in all a good run with absolutely no break downs and only the usual repairs muffler and one set of brakes.
